SEX EDUCATION
Introduction
Recently, there was a debate on VNExpress.net regarding the introduction of sex education into Vietnam's grade 5 program.
Some parents were shocked when their 11 year-old kids asked them for information about human's reproduction system. They were embarrassed, and didn't know how to answer appropriately. In their opinions, it's too early for their kids to learn about these "adult topics".
Other parents, however, voiced their support for sex education in grade 5 program. They said that it's important for their kids to learn about these issues before reaching puberty. Furthermore, they wanted sex education curriculum to use a more familiar and straight-forward language instead of "hiding behind" too many "scientific terms".
Discussion
- Do you think that sex education in grade 5 is too early?
- Regardless of when sex education is introduced, do you think that a good sex education must not only include information about physical aspects (e.g. anatomy, reproduction mechanism, etc.), but also about the social, interpersonal and emotional aspects as well? (E.g. about the notions such as: love, desire, trust, peer pressure, freewill, respect for individual freedom and rights, etc.)
- Do you think that the ultimate responsibility for sex education rests not on the school system but on each and every parent? Can parents help their kids if they, themselves, are not open about sex?
- Do you think parents' attitude towards issues like gender equality, women's right, virginity, etc… has a really important influence on their kids' lives?
