THE MODERN DEFINITION OF FEMININITY

In Charlotte Bronte’s classic Jane Eyre, our protagonist had to overcome many obstacles to develop into a smart and independent, but kind-hearted woman. Her struggle symbolizes a constant balancing act between the need to be independent and the ability to let go so she can fall in love. Many people see her successful struggle as a symbol of modern femininity.
In today’s world, girls growing up with constant pressure from parents and peers to do well at school, to be competitive so they can get into good university, and then go on to have a good career. On top of that, some people still expect them to look beautiful and to be soft and gentle.
